59:100 - No Way Out

Days before I left the deli, I took an hour-long break one day to finish up a company survey. The break room’s TV was on a classic films channel, and it happened to show Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Then I had to go back to work. Determined to finish watching it, and I spent most of one night watching it and other films. I haven’t seen the film in ages, so I figured at some point I’d do a pic.
Back in my days in the mid 90’s, this film was my favorite of Disney’s, but I had trouble with the wolf chase scene. Now I was brought up on films and shows of violent car chases and gun fights but for some odd reason I could never bring myself to seeing this scene w/o getting frightened. Of course now I’ve long gotten over that, yet my parents refuse to let my fright go.
This was originally gonna be #54 (Tower), where Belle and Philippe approach the castle, but then I decided to change to a more chaotic scene since I barely ever draw those, so I started over. The original sketch of the horse is here [link]
The bodies of Belle and Philippe were no problem, but their faces were a nightmare. Philippe took forever since I couldn’t sketch him w/o making him look like a horse incarnation of Robert Plant or Raul Julia. Finally I drew Philippe just standing (I had finally felt his head was sketched correctly) for the original sketch until redoing it for the other pic idea. The wolves were surprisingly easy to sketch, heads and all. Neither had to be erased at all and they just came flawlessly on the paper. Just don’t get me started on how many times I had to re-sketch Belle’s face! And I still despise how she came out…
All entirely drawn to the charming, uplifting tune of ‘80s Iron Maiden. Background done w/ pencil, characters colored on Gimp, and snowflakes done by scratching a white colored pencil and sprinkling the background.
